If you're like me, you love to cross stitch, but sometimes worry about overdoing it - I mean, how many framed pieces do you need? I love making art that is useful, and in the past year have spent time brainstorming how I can make cross stitch that is useful. Here are some of the ideas I've come across. They include cross stitch buttons, wall hangings, bags and pouches, and frames. Cross Stitch Buttons
Wall HangingsWhile making a wall hanging may not seem that different than framing, it can help reduce costs. Framing a large piece (properly) can be very expensive. Finishing your piece (or gift) as a fabric wall hanging makes it something different, lighter, an easier to send. Follow instructions on how to sew a dowel pocket for hanging mini quilts, or make your own (or buy) magnetic poster hangers, like these. Bags and PouchesStitch something pretty and then sew it into an accessories bag, or even into a craft organizer for your next stitch project. These projects are best done on linen evenweave or linen Aida so that they drape like traditional fabric. Cross Stitch FrameInstead of framing your cross stitch, you can cross stitch a frame! Measure carefully what coverage you'll need to cover an existing frame (the wood craft ones are your best bet), and then design your pattern to fit, knowing your cloth count. This project would be a perfect way to do a birth announcement.
